ASK QUESTIONS – BE PRESENT AND TALK ABOUT SCHOOL | WEEK 3

Questions to Ask about School

Whether you are home schooling or sending your kids to a public, charter, or private school, it is important as a mom to talk with them about what goes on in school.  If you home school, you can ask this list of questions maybe about their art classes or soccer practice, etc. My kids have been in three different school systems (private, charter, & homeschool,) so we’ve experience and learned different perspectives of what’s offered out there.  Bottom line, no matter which system you choose, it is always a good idea to check in on your kids to see how they are interacting with their teacher and friends at school.  And it’s a great way to see if there’s anything you need to address or guide them through.  In primary school years, your kids might tell you more about funny stories and cute things that they did with their friends.  As they get into the junior high and high school years, it may be more about relationships and what their friends did or didn’t do and how they are seen by their peers. They may get embarrassed to talk about at times, but that’s why it’s important to ask them questions.

Here’s a list of questions to Ask about their school:

  1. Tell me one thing that made you feel happy? Brave? Smart?
  2. What challenged you at school today?
  3. Who is/are your best friend(s)? Describe them to me.
  4. If you could be the teacher of your class tomorrow, how would you teach the class?  What things would you do?
  5. Who do you want to make friends with that you haven’t already? And why do you want to be friends with them?
  6. Did you help someone today? Is yes, how?
  7. What’s something new you learned today?
  8. What is your easiest subject? Hardest subject?
  9. How would you rate your day on a scale of 1 to 10? And why?  10 being the best kind of day.
  10. What is the most popular thing to do at recess?
  11. Are there times when you feel left out? Or bullied?
  12. If you were the principle for a day, what would you add to your school? What would you stop doing at your school?

BONUS: If anyone in the world could be your teacher for a day who would it be? (a superhero, popstar, etc.) I would love to hear them say “Mom.” 😊

Pick a time and a quiet environment and devote your time to your kids when you ask these questions.  Make sure that your phone or devise are not in use because when you shift your 100% focus on them it shows that you are interested in them and builds their worth.  If you’re interested in hearing more about the different school systems we’ve tried, leave a comment below or go to the Contact Us page at www.beinspiredasamom.com

You’re an amazing mom!  You can crush this series!!!

Remember to check back next week for another list of questions to Ask your kids to Get to Know Them (last week of the series).
